Lake Constance – Germany’s Riviera
Despite having travelled extensively around Germany, we had never been to Lake Constance. The area isn’t called Germany’s Riviera for nothing! With its stunning scenery and mild climate, there really is nothing not to like! When we planned holiday, we wanted to include something a little bit different. We finally settled on the popular Bavarian city of Lindau and checked out what accommodation was available in the area. My husband came across an unusual and quite lavish option of staying on a boat. As you can imagine, it came with quite a luxurious price tag – but we went ahead hoping that it would be a great experience for all of us.
The 4-Star Helvetia Boutique Resort Hotel is located by the pedestrian-only promenade in Lindau Harbour, with its much photographed lion monument and lighthouse. The views from the hotel are amazing as you’re literally overlooking the harbour.
Guests have the option of staying in any of the exquisite rooms and suites in the main hotel or on the hotel’s motor boat or sailing boats. We booked a lovely cosy room for three nights as well as the boat as I wasn’t sure if I really wanted to stay in such a confined space on the boat for more than three days! When we booked the boat, we added the option of having a skipper to join us for a couple of hours on two of the days as we don’t have a boat licence.
The fantastic buffet breakfast was included in the price and we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy it on the terrace, overlooking the beautiful lake.
Having a lie-in doesn’t mean you’ll miss breakfast
The hotel’s wellness area also includes a swimming pool – perfect if you don’t fancy the tiny shower on the boat! On the Sunday morning, we decided to take the opportunity to use the pool as it’s possible to have breakfast later on Sunday’s. We also overslept another morning and arrived half an hour after breakfast had officially finished. We were hoping to get at least a coffee and croissant but were delighted when we were brought the breakfast platter – available for those of us who like the occasional lie-in!
Banana fun on the lake
The sky was blue and the sun was out – ready for our fun day on the lake with our friendly skipper, Fritz. As a local, he was able to tell us a lot about the region. He pointed out the spot where the River Rhine flows into Lake Constance by the Altenrhein Nature Reserve. He also showed us the fabulously hidden Fischerstüble restaurant in Fussach (Austria), where I had my favourite meal Bodenseefelchen – again!
Back on the boat after a delicious lunch, our son was over the moon that he was allowed to steer the boat on the busy lake. On the second day, Fritz arranged for a banana to be tied to the boat. It was even more fun when Fritz decided to join my son on the banana – and not so lucky when it tipped over and he lost his sunglasses! I even videoed the whole thing (just for a few seconds before rescuing my son)!
I hope you can get a sense of how much fun our trip was and that I’ve whetted your appetite enough for you to want to experience it for yourselves. And I’m happy to say that we thoroughly enjoyed the three days that we spent on the boat – despite living together in such close proximity! Mind you, it did help that we were extremely lucky with the weather and that we never got stuck on the boat!
