The Rhine in Flames event dates back to 1756 to honour the visit of the Trier Elector, Johann Philipp von Walderdorff, to Koblenz. A Firework display was organised for him as well as a spectacular boat parade. In August 1845, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert celebrated their honeymoon on a steamship along the River Rhine between Bonn and Stolzenfels Castle. The Queen was said to have thoroughly enjoyed the romantic landscape from her viewpoint on deck. On 12th August, a large firework display was organised to honour their visit. Since then, fireworks have been displayed in many of the cities, towns and villages that are dotted along the River Rhine.
