Juist Island – a hidden treasure in the North Sea
Juist Island is located on Germany’s North Sea coast and is one of my favourite places to go – so much so that I visit the island at least once a year. Juist is not only beautiful; it’s also a great place for kids and is also dog-friendly – making it an ideal location for us to take our little dog Charlie. We fell in love with this magical place in 1998 and have been going back ever since.
This car-free island is only 17km long and (in parts) only 1km wide. It can be reached by taking the ferry from Norddeich Harbour, which is a 3-hour-drive from Düsseldorf.
Juist Island’s stunning, wide sandy beaches with their typical beach chairs are what dreams are made of. The restaurants and cafés are ideally located to enjoy a meal or a drink while taking in the fabulous sea views. You’ll find plenty of accommodation located close to the beach, making it ideal for families with young children. The island is also a great place to introduce children to cycling as there are some really lovely cycle paths – perfect for little legs to practise on two wheels!
Another fantastic event that I can highly recommend is Juist’s music festival, which is held every year in May.
