When I visit my home country, I really miss having a chat with the cashier at my local supermarket about the weather or the friendly offer of helping me pack my bags. This simply doesn’t happen in Germany. Maybe it’s the famous German efficiency that appears to be more important than customer service – something that’s not a high priority in Germany!
Take it with a pinch of salt
Although Germans themselves are very friendly and helpful (hilfsbereit), people working in customer service roles can often appear quite rude. Don’t be offended if someone seems dismissive or unhelpful, it’s not personal. It’s simply not expected or demanded as it is in other countries.
